Post-2023 All-Class Reunion Message

To All our Fellow MHS Alumni and Friends -

Well, the predicted morning rain did arrive but it did not dampen the spirit that was evident right from the 10 a.m. start.

By noon even the rains departed and the sun came out to shine all afternoon.

Nearly 1,000 attended, nearly matching 2018 - which pleasantly exceeded our initial expectation and countered the established trend!

Many thanks to all of you who attended the 2023 All-Class Reunion.

It was so great seeing so many familiar faces and reading all the positive comments on Facebook and elsewhere. Many of you also had the opportunity to visit the Yellow Building - aka Diane Toulson Building - aka old Milford High School and today home of River Park senior and disabled access apartments.

Of course, kudos to our “small but mighty” MHS All-Class Committee who indoors - from our registration team - to outdoors organizing parking, concessions and the car show - went well beyond the call of duty to make this event possible!

Also thanks to City of Milford staff, Bill Garfield in the Recreation office, Steven Johnson at Public Works, Tom Hunt at Public Works and the Board of Ed and City maintenance crews at Parsons. In addition, we received a big boost from the Foran High School Key Club students who came out both on Friday and Saturday to help.

All in all - a very memorable Saturday in the storied history of Milford High School. Are we going to do this again in 2028? Stay tuned …

  Calling All Classes!

This Milford High School, Milford, CT, website includes a dedicated web page for every Milford High School graduating class. A few class members have responded with scans and written information for posting. But many class pages remain blank. No tidbit of information is too small. Email us your picture scans, personal stories, just about any information about your class to: allclassmhs@gmail.com.

Will 2013 be the LAST MHS All-Class Reunion?

The numbers tell the story since the first Milford High All-Class Reunion was held on a brilliantly clear and sunny day in 1983 when among many other activities including a downtown parade we enjoyed watching an active military duty parachuters fall out of the sky - making a pinpoint landing on the football field in front of more than 10,000 participants.

It was a glorious day in 1983 celebrating what was really a sad reality - the end of Milford High School - the city’s original high school dating back to the mid-19th century - 1842 to be exact. Click here for a short history of our beloved MHS.

Yes, the numbers do tell the story, even on our own All-Class Committee, with those passing since our last All-Class Reunion in 2018 including Bruce Kuryla (‘61) on Sept. 1, 2022, and Carol Molloy Smith (‘56), also last year.

And then there’s this: From more than 10,000 MHS alumni attending in 1983, just a little more than 1,100 registered for the last All-Class Reunion in 2018 - and the attendance figure at the 2023 event will likely have a large bearing on whether the event can be sustained for another one in 2028.

“It’s getting harder every event,” Co-Chair Deb Smith admitted. Indeed, by 2028, no former graduate will be younger than 60 considering that the last MHS graduation occurred in 1983 (although students who attended MHS up to 1983 had the option to list MHS as their graduation school in 1984 and 1985 while attending Law or Foran).

And now in 2023 those graduates of MHS from the 1950s and 1960s - who historically have had the highest All-Class attendance rates - are now in their 70s and 80s - with health and transportation issues increasingly working against event attendance.

“COVID hasn’t helped, either,” added Co-Chair Win Smith.

All of this is why it’s very important that we reach as many former classmates as possible, especially from the 1970s and 80s that have had disappointing attendance rates.

To counter this trend, ideally we would have a class representative from each year on the All-Class Committee, if not to physically attend the meetings but rather to help us get the word out to fellow classmates.

A shout out to Martha “Marty” Beard Merk (‘62) who for more than 20 years has been faithfully chronicling our active list of MHS graduates, in addition to keeping our “Missing MHS Alumni” and “Deceased” MHS alumni lists that can be found within this website. Marty and helpers through the years have done their best to keep these pages updated and accurate, and please help them keep these accurate and up-to-date by reporting address changes and especially if you know someone from the missing list. JUNE 22 UPDATE: Registration and Activities in the auditorium.

Do you own a Classic Car?

While the definition of “Classic Car” may be subject to some interpretation, the All-Class Committee is nevertheless inviting any MHS Alum to display their own classic car in a special display planned for the June 24 event in the parking lot behind the gym and Yellow Building.

All-Class Committee member Bill Doolittle (‘69) is heading up the organization of the MHS Classic Cars display and wants to hear from you.

Bill is planning to bring his special baby to the event himself, a sweet 1965 Rangoon Red GT convertible Mustang, pictured with Bill, above. Anyone interested in reserving a spot in the show should contact Bill at: bcdoo@aol.com ASAP as space is limited.

Is the Indian mascot politically incorrect?

What do you think about the use of “Indian” images and logos? Is the following statement from former American Psychological Association President Ronald F. Levant true: "The use of American Indian mascots as symbols in schools is particularly troubling because schools are places of learning. These mascots are teaching stereotypical, misleading and too often, insulting images of American Indians.” Or do you believe that the movement to erase what others believe is a respectful tribute to Milford’s historical past has gone too far? How do you feel about the Milford High “Indian” logo? Tell us your opinion and send it to: allclassmhs@gmail.com and we’ll print it on this discussion page - CLICK HERE.
